Final D is the biggest edge-letter list on this site — 244 six-letter words ending in D, three more than ending-E — and it is really two lists in one: the -ED wall of 190 past-tense and participle forms, and a compact 54-word remainder where the interesting endings live.
Quick choices from the D list
No-repeat examples in the site’s answer pool include sorted, stored, raised, traced, island, friend, toward, shield, and period. If a repeat is allowed, the pool also has agreed, exceed, indeed, filled, passed, rigged, and second. Answer-pool membership is a site label, not a prediction.

Filter 6 letter words ending in D
Narrow the final-D data by the previous letter, required or excluded letters, vowel count, repeats, and letter-coverage score. Filtering runs in your browser.

The -ED wall and how to breach it
The static file has 244 entries: 140 use six different letters and 104 repeat at least one letter. Counting A/E/I/O/U, shrewd is the only one-vowel entry, 183 have two vowels, 59 have three, and queued — four vowels in six letters — is the file’s curiosity.
| Ending | Entries | No repeated letter | In this site’s answer pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ED | 190 | 105 | 71 |
| -ND | 19 | 11 | 10 |
| -RD | 12 | 6 | 8 |
| -ID | 10 | 6 | 1 |
| -LD | 6 | 6 | 3 |
| -AD | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| -OD | 2 | 2 | 2 |
shrewd and shroud complete the table as the only -WD and -UD entries.
Two gray tiles can demolish this file. A gray E removes the 190-word -ED wall at minimum; add a gray N and the -ND family goes too, leaving at most 35 records. That is the fastest large-list collapse available on this site, which makes E and N the priority probes once the final D is green.
Families beyond the wall
The remainder rewards a second look. -ND keeps the everyday core: around, friend, ground, island, second, beyond. -RD mixes direction words — aboard, inward, onward, toward, upward — with record, regard, reward and the stray wizard. -ID is the adjective corner (afraid, candid, morbid, placid, sordid), almost none of it in the answer pool. -LD carries the modal should beside shield and uphold, and -OD consists of exactly method and period.
Inside the wall itself, the doubled letters follow spelling rules. The GG ladder — bagged, nagged, ragged, rigged, rugged — swaps one vowel through the same frame, the consequence of doubling before -ED after a short vowel. EE (agreed, exceed, indeed) and LL (filled, polled, pulled) lead the count of 45 side-by-side doubles.
Coverage picks with the last tile fixed
By this site’s letter-coverage score, the strongest six-distinct-letter entries are sorted (94), stored (94), raised (93), rinsed (93), and traced (91) — all of them -ED forms that still test R, S, and T efficiently. The score is a coverage heuristic inside this data version, not an answer probability.
Worked filter: four candidates from three clues
Suppose the final D is green, R was yellow in position 3, and E and N are both confirmed gray, with repeats ruled out. Enter:
- Yellow letters: R:3
- Exclude letters: EN
- Repeated letters: No repeated letters
Against the current 244-record file, four candidates survive: toward, absurd, upward, and wizard. The two gray letters wiped out -ED and -ND together; every survivor keeps its R away from position 3. The result is reproducible in the finder above, and a probe of W settles most of it.
Using the list outside Wordle
For crosswords, the grammar shortcut is strong: a past-tense clue means -ED and 190 candidates, while a “direction” clue points at the -RD compass words. For spelling practice, the GG ladder and its EE/LL cousins are a compact lesson in when English doubles a consonant before -ED.

Frequently asked questions
How many six-letter words ending in D are in this list?
The current accepted-guess data contains 244 six-letter words ending in D — the largest ending list on this site. Of those, 97 also appear in the 682-word answer pool.
Which letter most often comes before the final D?
E, by a landslide: 190 of the 244 records end in -ED. N follows with 19 -ND records and R with 12 -RD records.
Which D-ending words avoid the -ED pattern entirely?
54 records. The notable families are -ND (around, friend, ground, island, second), -RD (aboard, record, toward, wizard), -ID (afraid, candid, placid), and -LD (shield, should, uphold). METHOD and PERIOD are the only -OD entries.
How should I filter after a green final D?
Resolve E first — one gray E removes at least 190 of 244 records. Then enter yellow letters with their forbidden positions, exclude confirmed gray letters, and use count bounds only when duplicate feedback proves them.
