Final N splits by grammar. The current data holds 103 six-letter words ending in N, and two families cover two-thirds of it: the -EN participles — beaten, broken, chosen, driven, frozen — and the -ON nouns — action, nation, motion, option, reason. Knowing which family the clue implies is half the solve.
Quick choices from the N list
No-repeat examples in the site’s answer pool include listen, stolen, garden, modern, action, vision, obtain, and origin. If the board permits a duplicate, the pool also contains button, cotton, common, hidden, sudden, lesson, and ribbon. Answer-pool membership is a site label, not a prediction.

Filter 6 letter words ending in N
Narrow the final-N data by the previous letter, required or excluded letters, vowel count, repeats, and letter-coverage score. Filtering runs in your browser.

What the N data contains
The static file has 103 entries: 54 use six different letters and 49 repeat at least one letter. Counting A/E/I/O/U, three entries — strewn, sylvan, thrown — have a single vowel, 70 have two, and 30 have three.
| Ending | Entries | No repeated letter | In this site’s answer pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| -EN | 40 | 21 | 23 |
| -ON | 27 | 13 | 15 |
| -IN | 10 | 6 | 5 |
| -AN | 9 | 5 | 2 |
| -RN | 7 | 3 | 2 |
| -GN | 4 | 2 | 1 |
| -MN | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| -WN | 2 | 2 | 1 |
outrun completes the file as the only -UN entry.
Participles, nouns, and the silent corners
-EN is the verb family: irregular participles like beaten, broken, chosen, driven, frozen, gotten, hidden plus verbs of change — darken, fasten, lessen, loosen. -ON is nearly all nouns, from the abstract reason and season to the concrete button, cannon, ribbon. -IN hides the -AIN verbs: attain, obtain, ordain, regain, retain.
Then come the corners that trip spellers. -GN ends in a G you cannot hear — assign, benign, cosign, design — and -MN in a silent N: autumn, column, solemn. In feedback terms, a yellow G or M late in the word with a green final N is a strong pointer at these seven records.
Doubles before a final N
21 records double a letter side by side. TT leads with five (attain, button, cotton, gotten, kitten), DD follows with four (hidden, madden, sadden, sudden), and SS adds three (assign, lessen, lesson). The doubles cluster tightly in positions 3–4, so duplicate feedback there is diagnostic.
Coverage picks with the last tile fixed
By this site’s letter-coverage score, astern tops the file at the maximum 100, followed by retain (98), reason (94), listen (92), and stolen (90). All five probe the R/S/T/E cluster that divides -EN from -ON most cleanly. The score is a coverage heuristic inside this data version, not an answer probability.
Worked filter: four candidates from three clues
Suppose the final N is green, R was yellow in position 2, and A and T are both confirmed gray, with repeats ruled out. Enter:
- Yellow letters: R:2
- Exclude letters: AT
- Repeated letters: No repeated letters
Against the current 103-record file, four candidates survive: sermon, modern, burden, and reckon. Each contains an R away from position 2 and avoids A and T. The result is reproducible in the finder above; probing O against E separates the -ON survivors from the -EN ones immediately.
Using the list outside Wordle
For crosswords, match the clue’s part of speech to the family: a past participle points at -EN, a thing at -ON, a “gain/keep” verb at -AIN. For spelling drills, the silent -GN and -MN corners are the classic test cases, and this file holds all seven of their six-letter members.

Frequently asked questions
How many six-letter words ending in N are in this list?
The current accepted-guess data contains 103 six-letter words ending in N. Of those, 51 also appear in this site's 682-word answer pool.
Which letter most often comes before the final N?
E leads with 40 -EN records, followed by O with 27 -ON records and I with 10 -IN records. A has 9, R has 7, and the small -GN, -MN, -WN, and -UN corners hold the other 10.
What are the silent-letter families in this data?
The -GN group — assign, benign, cosign, design — and the -MN group — autumn, column, solemn — end in letters you cannot hear. Both patterns are worth memorizing for spelling as much as for puzzles.
How should I filter after a green final N?
Probe E and O first, since they cover 67 of the 103 records. Then enter yellow letters with their forbidden positions, exclude confirmed gray letters, and use minimum or maximum counts only when duplicate feedback proves a bound.
