No ending on this site is as concentrated as final R. The current data has 180 six-letter words ending in R, and 143 of them — nearly four in five — end in -ER. That makes E the single most informative probe on the board once the final R turns green.
Quick choices from the R list
No-repeat examples in the site’s answer pool include answer, silver, finder, master, editor, junior, flavor, and guitar. If the board permits a duplicate, the pool also contains better, bitter, butter, letter, matter, copper, dinner, mirror, and summer. Answer-pool membership is a site label, not an official answer prediction.

Filter 6 letter words ending in R
Narrow the final-R data by the previous letter, required or excluded letters, vowel count, repeats, and letter-coverage score. Filtering runs in your browser.

Tip: click a result to copy it. Yellow constraints require the letter but ban it from the positions you list. If the same letter is yellow twice, set its minimum count to 2.
One probe letter rules the file
The static file has 180 entries: 80 use six different letters and 100 repeat at least one letter. Counting A/E/I/O/U, 148 entries have two vowels, 31 have three, and airier is the only four-vowel record.
| Ending | Entries | No repeated letter | In this site’s answer pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ER | 143 | 62 | 81 |
| -OR | 22 | 14 | 9 |
| -AR | 13 | 4 | 5 |
| -UR | 1 | — | concur |
| -IR | 1 | — | repair |
A gray E does not merely trim this list — it detonates it. The -ER block vanishes, and so does every leftover word carrying an E elsewhere, such as editor or cellar. Only 25 of the 180 records contain no E at all. A yellow E, by contrast, mostly confirms you are still inside -ER territory with the E misplaced earlier in the word.
-ER, -OR, -AR: three jobs for one sound
The three families divide by function. -ER carries agent nouns and comparatives — finder, keeper, singer, worker beside better, closer, darker, higher. -OR holds the Latin agents: editor, factor, mentor, vendor, anchor. -AR is the odd corner of household nouns and adjectives: cellar, collar, dollar, guitar, vulgar. When a clue implies “someone who does X,” -ER and -OR split the work — and this file gives -ER a 143-to-22 head start.
Doubles: the TT dynasty
39 records double a letter side by side, and TT alone claims ten: better, bitter, butter, jitter, letter, matter and four more. LL follows with six (cellar, collar, dollar, miller, pillar, taller), PP with five (appear, copper, pepper, topper, zipper), and NN with four (dinner, manner, runner, winner). If duplicate feedback lands with a green final R, the doubled letter almost always sits in positions 3–4, directly before the -ER.
Coverage picks with the last tile fixed
By this site’s letter-coverage score, the strongest six-distinct-letter entries are antler (99), tensor (97), sander (95), tinder (95), and lander (94). ANTLER’s five distinct consonants around a single vowel-pair make it the highest-scoring word in this file. The score is a coverage heuristic inside this data version, not an answer probability.
Worked filter: four candidates from three clues
Suppose the final R is green, L was yellow in position 3, E is confirmed gray, and repeats are ruled out. Enter:
- Yellow letters: L:3
- Exclude letters: E
- Repeated letters: No repeated letters
Against the current 180-record file, four candidates survive: tailor, clamor, ovular, and flavor. The gray E removed the entire -ER block; the yellow L requires an L outside position 3. The result is reproducible in the finder above, and a probe of A or O finishes the job.
Using the list outside Wordle
For crosswords, read the clue’s grammar first: a comparative points at -ER, a Latin-flavored agent at -OR, an object noun at -AR. For vocabulary practice, the -ER comparatives make a natural ladder — darker, harder, higher, larger, longer — while the -OR set doubles as a tour of borrowed Latin agents.

Frequently asked questions
How many six-letter words ending in R are in this list?
The current accepted-guess data contains 180 six-letter words ending in R. Of those, 97 also appear in this site's 682-word answer pool.
Which letter most often comes before the final R?
E, overwhelmingly: 143 of the 180 records end in -ER. O follows with 22 -OR records and A with 13 -AR records. CONCUR and REPAIR are the only -UR and -IR entries.
What does a gray E do to this list?
It erases the entire 143-word -ER block in one stroke, plus any remaining record that carries an E elsewhere, such as EDITOR or CELLAR. Only 25 of the 180 records contain no E at all.
How should I filter after a green final R?
Probe E first — it settles most of the file. Then enter yellow letters with their forbidden positions, exclude confirmed gray letters, and use minimum or maximum counts only when duplicate feedback proves a bound.
