This page contains 228 six-letter words starting with A from the site’s current accepted-guess pool. The list is broader than the answer pool: 30 records are also in the site’s 682-word answer set. Use it after the first A is known, then let the board—not a generic “best words” list—supply the remaining constraints.

The data has 93 words with six distinct letters and 135 with at least one repeat. The three largest second-letter groups are AB (39), AL (24), and AC (23). Those figures describe this fixed data version; they are not claims about usage frequency across English.

What the second letter changes

Because A already occupies position 1, the second-letter filter is the quickest broad split. The current records break down as follows:

The remaining 56 records are spread across ten smaller second-letter groups. A prefix count is useful for navigation, but it does not make one group more likely to be the answer.

Repeated letters are a board constraint

The 135 repeated-letter records include familiar candidates such as access, affect, agreed, and animal. The 93 six-distinct-letter records include action, admire, amount, and answer. Neither group is automatically better.

Early in a solve, six different letters can reveal more positions. Later, a repeated letter may be mandatory. If one A is green and a second A receives non-gray feedback, set A:2 under minimum counts. If a second A is gray while the first A remains green, A:1 under maximum counts records the upper bound. Do not put A in the general Exclude field when one A is already confirmed.

Worked filter: one candidate from three clues

Suppose position 1 is green A, position 6 is green T, N was yellow in position 2, and E is confirmed gray. Enter:

• Yellow letters: N:2
• Exclude letters: E

Against the current 228-record file, those combined constraints leave one result: AMOUNT. N:2 means N must occur, but not in the second position. The pattern fixes A and T; the exclude field removes every word containing E. This is reproducible in the finder above and is more reliable than scanning a hand-picked list.

A few useful branches

If only the first A is known, start with the second-letter group rather than adding guessed constraints. If the second letter is C, the current data includes accent, across, action, active, actual, and other AC forms. If R is yellow, use the yellow field with every position where R has already failed. If duplicate feedback is ambiguous, read the repeated-letter rules before setting a count.

The finder sorts by the site’s letter-coverage score by default. That score measures coverage within this site’s answer pool; it is not an answer probability or an official Wordle ranking. The source, formulas, version boundaries, and limitations are documented in the word-list methodology.

Latin prefix families and their look-alikes

Several of the largest groups above exist because Latin left English two productive prefixes: AB- “away” (absent, absorb, abduct) and AD- “toward” (admire, adhere, advent). AD- has a spelling habit worth knowing. Before several consonants — C, L, P, R, S, and T among them — it assimilated, doubling the letter that follows. That one process built ACC- words such as accept and accuse, ALL- words such as allied and allure, appeal and appear, arrest and arrive, ASS- words such as assign and assist, and the six-word ATT- group, where even the English coinage attune copies the Latin doubling pattern.

The habit shows up in the numbers. Across all 228 records, 44 double the letter immediately after A — 19 percent of the list — so when duplicate feedback arrives alongside a green A, positions 2 and 3 are the first slots to test. Assimilation also drags whole groups toward repeats: the AT group has zero six-distinct-letter records, AS keeps 4 of 16, and AC keeps 8 of 23, while the unassimilated AD group stays fully distinct in 12 of 21 words. Within that AD group, the most common third letters in this data are D (5 records), V (advent, adverb, advice, advise), and O (adored, adorer, adores, adorns) — after a green A with a confirmed D, the usually weak V becomes a better probe than its overall frequency suggests.

The look-alikes cut the other way. A doubled letter is not proof of a Latin prefix: annual doubles because its root is annus “year,” and abbots doubles inside a borrowed root. Native English contributed its own unrelated A- meaning “on” — aboard, aflame, afloat, asleep — with no doubling at all. And in autumn, anchor, animal, and acorns, the A is simply the first letter of the root. Prefix knowledge narrows spelling shapes; it cannot tell you which family holds the answer.

Choose the page that matches the task
