D is a prefix letter. The current file holds 65 six-letter words starting with D, and the Latin DE- family alone claims 27 of them — more than DI and DA combined. After a green D, the single most informative question is whether an E sits in position 2.
A quick D-word shortlist
For six different letters, the answer pool includes direct, detail, dancer, danger, driven, driver, and during. If the board allows a repeat, it also has deeply, degree, divide, dinner, dollar, and double. These are candidates to test against your tiles, not predictions.

What the D data contains
The static file has 65 entries: only 27 use six different letters while 38 repeat at least one letter, making this one of the more repeat-heavy lists on the site. Counting A/E/I/O/U, just two entries — deftly and depths — have a single vowel, 40 have two, and 23 have three.
| Opening | Entries | Details visible in the data |
|---|---|---|
| DE | 27 | The dominant group; only 7 avoid a repeated letter |
| DI | 11 | differ, dinner, direct, divide among them |
| DA | 9 | 5 are in the answer pool |
| DO | 9 | 6 have six different letters |
| DR | 6 | dragon, drawer, driven, driver |
| DU | 3 | during, dusted, duster |
The DE- repeat trap
The DE- family looks rich but punishes early repeat filters. Because so many DE- words add a second E — decade, decide, decree, degree, delete, deluge, desire, device, devote — only 7 of the 27 DE records keep six distinct letters. If you switch on “No repeated letters” while DE is still live, you silently discard most of the family.
The doubled letters tell the same story: of the nine side-by-side doubles in this file, the EE trio — decree, deeply, degree — all sit in DE. DECREE and DEGREE differ by a single letter, so a yellow C or G decides between them on its own. The remaining doubles are one-offs: dagger, dazzle, differ, dinner, dollar, dotted.
Coverage picks after a green D
By this site’s letter-coverage score, the leading six-distinct-letter entries are detail, direct, and duster (89), followed by dancer, danger, and donate (88). All of them test R, T, or N — the consonants that split this file most evenly. The score is a letter-coverage heuristic inside this data version, not an answer probability.
Worked filter: three candidates from two clues
Suppose D is green, R was yellow in position 2, A is confirmed gray, and the board rules out repeated letters. Enter:
- Yellow letters: R:2
- Exclude letters: A
- Repeated letters: No repeated letters
Against the current 65-record file, exactly three candidates remain: direct, duster, and during. Each keeps its R away from position 2 and avoids A. The result is reproducible in the finder above; a probe of the final letter separates the three immediately.
Using the list outside Wordle
For crosswords, lead with the DE question: if the second letter is not E, the candidate space drops from 65 to 38 at a stroke. For vocabulary practice, the DE- family is a compact tour of Latin prefixes — defend, define, demand, depict, derive, detect — while DR keeps the file’s agent nouns, drawer and driver.

Frequently asked questions
How many six-letter D words are in this list?
The current accepted-guess data contains 65 six-letter words starting with D. Of those, 33 also appear in this site's 682-word answer pool.
Which second letter has the most D-starting entries?
DE dominates with 27 records — more than the next two groups combined. DI has 11, while DA and DO have 9 each, DR has 6, and DU closes the file with 3.
How many D words contain repeated letters?
38 of the 65 records repeat at least one letter, and only 27 use six distinct letters. The DE- group is the reason: just 7 of its 27 entries avoid a repeat.
How should I filter after a green D?
Probe E early, because 27 of 65 records put it in position 2. Then enter yellow letters with their forbidden positions, exclude confirmed gray letters, and set minimum or maximum counts only when duplicate feedback proves a bound.
