M is the most regular opener in this data set: every one of its 81 records follows M with a vowel — or with Y in myself and mystic. There is no ML, MR, or MN cluster to worry about, so after a green M the puzzle immediately becomes a vowel question. The file holds 81 six-letter words starting with M, and 46 of them sit in the site’s answer pool, the highest share of any starting list published here.

A quick M-word shortlist

For six different letters, the answer pool includes modern, mother, motive, marble, master, minute, and mighty. If a repeat is possible, it also has manner, matter, middle, miller, mirror, missed, and moment. These are candidates to compare with your board, not predictions.

What the M data contains

The static file has 81 entries: 52 use six different letters and 29 repeat at least one letter. Counting A/E/I/O/U, only 5 entries have a single vowel — mighty, months, mostly, myself, mystic, all leaning on Y — while 59 have two vowels and 17 have three.

Because the second slot is always a vowel, a single well-chosen probe there is unusually efficient. O and A alone cover 41 of the 81 records; if both come back gray, the file drops to 40 candidates concentrated in MI and ME.

The double-D vowel chain

Fourteen records double a letter side by side, and the DD family is the showpiece: madden, meddle, middle, and muddle run the same consonant frame across four different vowels — only the O version is missing from the file. LL (mallet, miller), TT (matter, mutter), and SS (missed, mussel) add two entries each, with manner, mapped, miffed, and mirror covering NN, PP, FF, and RR.

If duplicate feedback arrives with a green M, check the DD chain first: the doubled letter sits in positions 3–4 in all four words, so a yellow D in position 3 or 4 is a strong pointer.

Coverage picks after a green M

By this site’s letter-coverage score, the leading six-distinct-letter entries are master (92), merits (91), mentor (89), mantle (86), and mental (86). All five test R, T, and E — the letters that do the most sorting work inside this file. The score remains a letter-coverage heuristic within this data version, not an answer probability.

Worked filter: four candidates from two clues

Suppose M is green, R was yellow in position 3, A is confirmed gray, and the board rules out repeats. Enter:

Against the current 81-record file, four candidates remain: mentor, modern, muster, and mother. Every one keeps its R away from position 3 and avoids A. The result is reproducible in the finder above, and one more confirmed vowel usually decides it.

Using the list outside Wordle

For crosswords, the vowel-second-letter rule is the shortcut: whatever the clue, the second character of a six-letter M word from this file is A, E, I, O, U, or Y.
